Goal
The goal of Volunteer Challenge is to motivate/stimulate/facilitate a continuous flow of volunteers from the west into Kenya (possibly later into Southern Sudan), for the purpose of raising support for rural local community projects, motivate the poor to fight against poverty and enhancing mutual & harmonious partnership among the peoples of this world.
Why volunteer?
Most organizations, especially the small ones lack financial and human resources to achieve their objectives. Therefore, having volunteers helps these organizations to realize their dream. Helping other makes you feel good, giving you some sense of satisfaction/accomplishment, and gives you a broader perspective on what's happening in the world around you. Besides all these, volunteering gives you experience that college and employers like to see on your resumes.
Major areas of focus
Initially most volunteers would be posted outside Nairobi , in South and North Rift valley, among the Masaai and Turkana pastoral communities. These are the areas where the poorest of the poor are found. At the moment the volunteers we need are in the areas of: IT specialists, conservation, water & sanitations, micro finance, support for disabled groups, organizational development, food security, livestock production, business, HIV/AIDS, youth counselling, planning, and education.
Expected backup
The volunteers shall be provided the following from the local back up office:
- Frequent/effective communication and updates
- Airport pickups;
- Placement and accommodation arrangement;
- Brief orientation, package information on Kenya, culture & language;
- 24 hour emergency support;
- Cell-phone sim card;
- General coordination;
